Lumbar Fusion
Lumbar fusions are typically performed to fuse an arthritic spine or to stop abnormal motion between vertebrae. Fusion surgery can be performed either from the front of the spine by retracting the abdominal contents or from the back by dividing the muscles overlying the back of the spine. Pedicle screws, which hold the vertebra in place until the fusion solidifies, are often used for lumbar fusion surgery.

| This video entitled "Sextant" demonstrates the use of minimally invasive percutaneous pedicle screw fixation for the spine. These screws are placed through small tiny incisions and the rod is delivered minimally invasively to stabilize and fuse the spine. | |
